Image: WBA calls purse bid for Khan vs. Maidana boutBy William Mackay: World Boxing Association light welterweight champion Amir Khan (23-1, 17 KO’s) got some bad news today when the WBA ordered a purse bid for his fight against WBA light welterweight interim champion Marcos Maidana (29-1, 27 KO’s) for Tuesday, September 21st at 10 AM at the World Boxing Associations Panama headquarters.

Maidana made a request to the WBA for the purse bid after having little luck in getting a fight with the 23-year-old Khan and fearing that he would be yet again side-stepped by Khan in favor of a lighter hitting opponent.

Now, Khan has no choice but to fight Maidana unless Khan wants to vacate the title rather than facing the power punching Argentinian. This could be a nightmarish fight for Khan if Maidana connects with something big.

Khan was already knocked out the last time he faced a big puncher in Breidis Prescott two long years ago. Now Khan has to face one of the biggest punchers in the light welterweight division. His trainer Freddie Roach is going to have to come up with an ingenious for Khan to win the fight without getting knocked out. Roach is a great trainer but he is limited in that he can only work some many miracles. He can’t get in there and take the shots to the jaw for Khan.

Khan doesn’t have a great chin and with the kind of power that Maidana has in his arsenal, it may be very difficult for Khan to stay on his feet for long unless he can run for 12 rounds to protect his chin.

Maidana has been trying to get a fight with Khan for a year now, but it finally looks like he’s going to get that fight. However, Maidana thinks Khan may choose to vacate rather than risk getting knocked out again.

It’s going to be interesting to see if Khan will give up the title and look for some lighter punchers to fight rather than risk getting knocked out once again.
