Viktor Postol and Martyniouk to work as sparring partners for Pacquiao for Algieri fight

pac553By Chris Williams: #1 WBC light welterweight contender Viktor Postol (26-0, 11 KOs) and lightweight Stan Martyniouk (13-2, 2 KOs) will reportedly be flying out to the Philippines to work as sparring partners for WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao’s November 22nd fight against Chris Algieri (20-0, 8 KOs).

Postol, 5’11”, and Martyniouk, 5’10”, are of similar height as the 5’10” Algieri, and Pacquiao’s trainer Freddie Roach obviously wants to try and get Pacquiao as ready as possible for the height and reach that Algieri will be bringing to this fight on 11/22 at the Cotai Arena, Venetian Resort, Macao, Macao S.A.R., China.

Postol and Martyniouk are much different fighters than Algieri. Neither of these guys are mobile. They both have the same height as Algieri, but that’s where the similarity begins and ends. Roach would have been better off finding smaller guys that had the elusiveness that Algieri has, because that’s going to be the biggest problem for the 35-year-old Pacquiao in this fight.

Algieri’s height won’t be the main problem for Pacquiao, because he’s already proven in the past that he could beat guys Algieri’s height when he defeated the 5’10” Oscar De La Hoya and 5’11” Antonio Margarito.

The thing that Pacquiao has struggled with in the last is movement from his opponents, and that’s what we’re going to be seeing plenty of on November 22nd when Algieri gets in the ring with Pacquiao. My guess is Algieri is going to be so dramatically different from Pacquiao’s sparring partners that we’re going to see a badly prepared Pacquiao for this fight.

Postol is waiting to see if he’s going to be getting a title shot against WBA/WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia. They have a purse bid scheduled, but it’s unknown if Garcia will bother taking the fight with Postol due to his difficult style.

If Garcia loses the fight to Postol then he can forget about ever getting a shot against WBA/WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. That won’t happen. That’s why a lot of boxing fans think Garcia will eventually vacate rather than take the fight against Postol.
