Fight Night-0002(Photo Credit: Amanda Kwok / SHOWTIME) By Allan Fox: IBF World super featherweight champion Rances Barthelemy (21-0, 12 KOs) remained unbeaten in easily defeating #3 IBF Fernando David Saucedo (52-6-3, 8 KOs) by a lopsided 12 round unanimous decision on Saturday night at the Fox Theater at Foxwoods Resort Casino in Mashantucket, Connecticut. The final judges’ scores were 120-108, 120-108 and 120-108.

Barthelemy, 32, hurt Saucedo in the 5th round after hitting him hard with a left hand to the head. But he was unable to finish Saucedo off despite hitting him with everything he had. The round ran out before Barthelemy could get him out of there.

Most of the rounds were very one-sided. Saucedo became the aggressor in the 2nd half of the fight in taking the fight to Barthelemy. However, it wasn’t effective aggression on Saucedo’s part.

Showtime needs to be a little more careful in green-lighting fights, because this was too one-sided. If Showtime had seen some of Saucedo’s past fights they would have known that he didn’t have the power to compete in against Barthelemy.

#4 WBO, #8 IBF, #9 WBC, #14 WBA Vanes Martirosyan (35-1-1, 21 KOs) defeated #5 WBC, #15 WBA Willie Nelson (23-2-1, 13 KOs) by a 10 round unanimous decision.

The judges’ scores were 97-93, 97-93 and 96-94. Martirosyan hurt Nelson right hands in the 2nd and 4th rounds. In the 4th round, Martirosyan was cut on his right eye from a punch from Nelson.

In the 5th round, Martirosyan flurried on Nelson after driving him to the ropes. Nelson covered up but he was still hit with a lot of shots.

Nelson fought well in the 7th round in landing some big punches. Martirosyan landed his share of shots, but Nelson got the better of it.

In the 8th round, Nelson was cut on the side of his left eye after taking same really big shots.

Martirosyan stepped up the pace in the 9th round in landing a lot of really hard punches. Nelson’s work rate dropped off significantly in the round because he was too busy trying to block the incoming from Martirosyan.

Both fighters traded big shots in the 10th and final round, but Martirosyan clearly got the better of the action.

After the fight, Martirosyan dedicated the bout to his late promoter Dan Goosen who died this past week. Martirosyan said “This one is for Dan. We love him and we miss him.”

In what could be the end of former IBF/WBC light heavyweight champion Chad Dawson’s career, he was surprisingly upset tonight by 2nd tier fighter Tommy Karpency (24-4-1, 14 KOs) in losing a 10 round split decision.

Dawson was hurt a couple of times in the fight most noticeably in the 8th round when he was hit hard by a right hand by Karpency. In the 7th, Dawson threw a left hand and winced immediately after connecting to the shoulder of Karpency.

For the remainder of the fight Dawson opted not to use his left hand. After the fight, Dawson said that he’d hurt his left shoulder in the 3rd round and was unable to use it afterwards.

The final judges’ scores were 96-94, 96-94 for Karpency and 96-94 for Dawson.

Dawson fought surprisingly well after he hurt his left shoulder in jabbing and dodging Karpency’s shots. However, in the 10th round, Dawson gave the round away by choosing to fight defensively instead of punching with the more aggressive Karpency.

“I hurt my left shoulder in the 3rd round,” Dawson said after the fight. “I landed more jabs than he did punches.”

Dawson may have landed more jabs, but Karpency landed more power punches in key rounds, and that was why he was given the decision.
