Tarver vs. Kayode: Antonio looking to beat a young name

By Jason Kim: IBO cruiserweight champion Antonio Tarver (29-6, 20 KO’s) will be looking to knock off one of the young contender 29-year-old Lateef Kayode (18-0, 14 KO’s) next month on May 26th in a venue to be determined in the U.S. Kayode is a Freddie Roach trained fighter with good power but limited experience and boxing skills. He punches hard but he’s very beatable still.

Kayode, #5 WBO, has picked up three good wins in his last three bouts against Nicholas Iannuzzi, Matt Godfrey and Felix Cora Jr. He’s looked good in each of the fights but he’s also looked very hittable and a little in the way being over-muscled to the point where he’s an arm punches.

Tarver has the much better skills in a fight between him and Kayode and he moves a lot better and is just the more sound fighter in every facet of the game. Tarver’s body was made for fighting and he’s not muscle bound and slowed from carrying around too much muscle. If Tarver can get into good shape for this fight, it’s going to be an easy one for him because Kayode looks very limited despite having trainer Freddie Roach as a trainer.

Tarver, 43, hasn’t fought since last July when he defeated International Boxing Organization cruiserweight champion Danny Green in a surprisingly easy 9th round stoppage. That was a big shock seeing Green handled so easily by Tarver, but it was all about Tarver having the better skills. He was simply the more talented fighter of the two, and this will likely bear true for Tarver’s fight against Kayode.

In his fight before that, Tarver moved up to the heavyweight division to take on and defeat Nagy Aguilera. Tarver did a good job of beating a decent heavyweight with good power. Tarver had rotten luck in his two fights against Chad Dawson, losing both of them in 2008 and 2009.
