Tarver-Green: Antonio faces his biggest puncher in years

By Jason Kim: 42-year-old former light heavyweight champion Antonio Tarver (28-6, 19 Ko’s) takes on a very dangerous Danny Green (31-3, 27 KO’s) on July 20th at the Entertainment Centre, in Sydney, Australia. The fight will be held in the 38-year-old Green’s neck of the woods, and this could go very bad for Tarver. One of the reasons things could end badly for Tarver, besides his advanced age, is that he’s going to have to take off a lot of weight to make the cruiserweight limit.

Tarver weighed 221 in his last fight against heavyweight Nagy Aguilera in October 2010. Tarver should have struck it out at heavyweight because he’s going to really put his body through hell trying to take off enough weight to battle at cruiserweight. Tarver has been looking kind of chunky and losing that weight to face a guy that’s powerful at cruiserweight has the makings of a Roy Jones Jr. type knockout loss for Tarver.

Green isn’t unbeatable, as but he’s difficult to fight because of his huge power. Forget about his age, Green is fighting like a guy in his last 20s rather than someone only two years away from 40. Tarver is going to get hit a lot in this fight and he hasn’t had to take a lot of hard head shots in quite some time. Tarver was beaten twice by Chad Dawson in 2008, but Dawson fought at a really slow pace and wasn’t throwing big power shots like the kind that Tarver will be absorbing from Green. Tarver might have been smarter by taking a tune-up at cruiserweight so that he could get accustomed to the weight rather than moving down and facing one of the hardest punchers in the division. I think Tarver is going to bet beaten by Green and possibly knocked out by him. Tarver is going to have to be on guard for 12 rounds if he wants to keep from getting knocked out in this fight.
