Image: Steward: “I believe it’s [Mayweather-Mosley] a dead-even fight”By Jason Kim: Trainer Emanuel Steward believes that WBA welterweight champion Shane Mosley (46-4, 39 KO’s) is the one to challenge unbeaten Floyd Mayweather Jr. (40-0, 25 KO’s) and get the most out of him this Saturday night in their bout at the MGM Grand, in Las Vegas, Nevada. In an article at the Grand Rapids Press, Steward says “This shapes up as a great bout – better than Manny Pacquiao and Oscar De La Hoya or Mayweather and De La Hoya, or Mayweather and Juan Manuel Marquez. Mosley tell test Mayweather, get him out of his comfort zone.

At 38, Mosley is still an exceptional human being. There’s something special about hi. He’ll bring out the best in Mayweather.” Steward will get few disagreements from people about his thoughts about Mosley bringing out the best in Mayweather. Mosley has a way of attacking his opponents that give them little other choice but to fight for their lives or else get stopped. Mayweather has been missing a high caliber opponent for the last six to eight years of his career, as he’s virtually walked through most of his opposition during those years.

To be sure, Mayweather hasn’t helped himself in some cases by matching himself against guys that he was clearly much better than going into the fight. As his career has progressed, it was hoped that he would start stepping it up at some point and start taking on the likes of Miguel Cotto, Manny Pacquiao, Andre Berto and Mosley. Mayweather hasn’t fought those guys, but he’s finally stepped up and fought Mosley, even if it is coming a little late in Mosley’s career. Better late than never, as some people would say.

If Mayweather is successful in beating Mosley this Saturday, hopefully Mayweather doesn’t wait until Pacquiao is at an advanced age before finally deciding to fight him. If so, we could be seeing another old timers fight like the dreadful one between Roy Jones Jr. and Bernard Hopkins that took place earlier this month. That fight should have been made years ago, yet the two fighters waited until both of them were in their 40s, much of their skills gone and boxing fans not highly interested in watching them.

Steward feels that Mosley’s attacking style and his energy will be greater than anything Mayweather has seen before in his career. “Mosley is just big enough to attack him,” Steward says. When asked to pick a winner of the fight, Steward says “It’s hard to call. I believe it’s a dead-even fight. The officiating will be the key.” Hopefully, the referee allows Mosley to fight on the inside and doesn’t break the two fighters when Mosley gets in close. Mayweather was able to dominate Ricky Hatton when the referee kept breaking them every time that Hatton would get in close trying to work on the inside.
