By Brian Webber: WBC interim junior middleweight champion Sebastian ‘The Towering Inferno’ Fundora weighed in at 153.3 lbs, and challenger Brian Mendoza weighed in at 153.5 lbs for their twelve-round headliner this Saturday, April 8th, at the Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, Calif. The Fundora vs. Mendoza event begins live on Showtime at 10:00 p.m. ET/7:00 p.m. PT.

Fundora (20-0-1, 13 KOs) will make his second title defense of his WBA interim 154-lb belt he was last year against Erickson Lubin. In the 6’5 1/2″ Fundora’s previous fight, he defeated Carlos Ocampo by a twelve-round unanimous decision last October.

Fundora, 25, is waiting for a title shot against undisputed junior middleweight champion Jermell Charlo. But with Charlo fighting only once a year, it could be two to three years before Fundora gets his shot.

That’s bad for Charlo because he’ll be 34 or 35 by then, and it won’t be an easy task at that age dealing with Fundora’s height and high work rate.

When is Fundora vs. Mendoza? Date, start time

Fundora vs. Mendoza will be taking place this Saturday, April 8th, live on Showtime. The event begins at 10:00 p.m. ET/7:00 p.m. PT.

Mendoza (21-2, 15 KOs) is getting this title shot after beating former IBF/WBA junior middleweight champion Jeison Rosario by a fifth-round knockout last November.

“In my last fight [Carlos Ocampo], I felt it a little bit more, but I didn’t really feel it with Lubin. With this fight, I’m super relaxed.  I’ve been training hard,” said Sebastian Fundora to Fighthype about whether he feels the energy for his fight this Saturday.

“I saw the knockdowns. I thought he looked good and strong,” Fundora said when asked if he watched his opponent Brian Mendoza’s win over Jeison Rosario. “I’ll see what he does on Saturday. I’m not Jeison Rosario. I’m a whole different fighter. I’ll see what he brings.

“We’ve been taking these opportunities and passing these opportunities, and they keep throwing them and throwing them, and we’re going to pass them every single time. When they say it’s time to fight for a world title, we’ll fight for a world title.

“He did good. He did exactly what I thought he was going to do in stopping Tony [Harrison],” said Fundora when asked about his thoughts on Tim Tszyu’s recent win over Tony Harrison.
