Rios vs. Antillon: Couldn’t a better opponent have been found for Brandon?

Image: Rios vs. Antillon: Couldn't a better opponent have been found for Brandon?By Chris Williams: While some boxing fans are really looking forward to the July 9th bout between newly crowned World Boxing Association (WBA) World lightweight champion Brandon Rios (27-0, 20 KO’s) against challenger Urbano Antillon (28-2, 20 KO’s), I’m not one of them.

Antillon has been beaten in two out of his last four fights, including his last one, and that disqualifies him for a title shot in my book. I don’t care that Antillon fought WBC lightweight champion Humberto Soto tough in a 12 round decision loss last December 2010, the fact remains that Antillon lost that fight and it was his second defeat in the last four bouts. That’s enough for me not to want to see Antillon fight for a title. I know he’s in the same stable as Rios and all, but I don’t care about that junk.

I want to see fighters that are actually winning their fights instead of getting beaten and then still getting another title shot. Antillon is ranked number #12 by the WBA. Couldn’t Rios have picked someone a little higher up like the #3 ranked Jorge Linaraes. I’d much prefer to see them two go at rather than seeing a guy that’s coming off of a loss getting a title shot like Antillon. I personally don’t care about this fight because I already know who’s going to win.

They need to at least pick guys that aren’t getting beaten in their last fights when trying to push these fights onto the public. I saw Antillon get beat by Soto, and I saw him get stopped by Miguel Acosta in July 2009. I don’t need to see Antillon now being given a title shot with those losses. It’s like he’s being rewarded for getting beaten. That’s not appealing.
