quillin52By Eric Thomas: WBO middleweight champion Peter Quillin (28-0, 20 KO’s) is facing a fairly tough test in his first defense of his title on February 9th against Fernando Guerrero (5-1, 19 KO’s) at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. Guerrero, 26, presents a tough fight for the 29-year-old Quillin because Guerrero can really punch and he’s a dangerous fighter if you don’t have good defensive skills, and that just happens to be one of Quillin’s major flaws in his game.

Quillin won the World Boxing Organization title in his last fight against former champion Hassan N’Dam N’Jikam last October, Quillin had N’Dam down six times in the fight, but he took a lot of shots in the process of winning the fight.

Quillin didn’t have to worry about the power of N’Dam, as he’s not much of a puncher and was spending most of the fight landing less than danger punches. Quillin had problems because he’s not a busy fighter and he tends to load up one or two shots and then wait around for a while before loading up another punch or two. Quillin’s one-dimensional offense enabled N’Dam to come back late in the fight and make things interesting with the pressure he put on Quillin.

The 5’9” southpaw Guerrero isn’t quite as big as the 5’11” Quillin, but he’s got more than enough size and power to give him a lot of troubles if he can land his big shots.

Guerrero has won his last four fights after being upset by Gravy Brewer last year in June in a 4th round TKO. Guerrero got careless and was taken out.
There’s not much on Guerrero’s resume in terms of quality other than wins over the likes of Ishe Smith, Saul Duran and Michael Walker.

Quillin will be looking to stop Guerrero so that he can impress boxing fans while at the same time minimize risks from having to get hurt by Guerrero.
