mosley3344334By Allan Fox: WBA World welterweight champion Paulie Malignaggi (32-4, 7 KO’s) and 41-year-old Shane Mosley (46-8-1, 39 KO’s) have reportedly agreed on a fight scheduled for April 27th at the Barclays Center, Brooklyn, New York, USA.

According to RingTV, the two fighters have agreed verbally but haven’t yet signed anything. Steve Bash, the lawyer for Malignaggi, is waiting for a few details to be “worked out” before they will be ready to go. But it looks good right now.

Mosley is pretty excited about getting the fight, saying to RingTV “Winning this [fight] and doing three, four or five more fights. I want to make a couple of more title defenses.”

I think it’s possible for Mosley to beat Malignaggi even though Mosley looks totally shot at this point in his career. He’s had zero luck since beating Antonio Margarito in January 2009. Since that huge win, Mosley has lost to Floyd Mayweather Jr., Manny Pacquiao and Saul Alvarez.

The positive is that he’s lost to only quality fighters, but the negative is that he’s looked bad enough to where it would be difficult to see him beating even just the run of the mill average contenders.

Mosley’s not pulling the trigger with his shots anymore, and his power looks to have completely disappeared on him for some reason. Usually the power is the last to go, but Mosley seems to have lost his speed, work rate and power. The only thing he seems to have now is the ability to move around the ring. He can still do that pretty well for a fighter his age. He’s not as fast as he once was on his feet, and he seems to have lost muscle mass from when he fought Margarito. He’s lost more slender looking now.

Mosley retired last June following a lopsided 12 round decision loss to Canelo Alvarez in May. Mosley took a brutal beating in that fight but he got a good payday out of it.

For the Malignaggi fight, Mosley will be trained by his father Jack Mosley, who will be stepping in for Naazim Richardson to take over the training chores. Jack Mosley was Shane’s trainer earlier in his career during his best years.
