Mitchell-Murray in the Summer

By Sean McDaniel: Unbeaten lightweight contender John Murray (31-0, 18 KO’s) will battle once beaten Kevin Mitchell (31-1, 23 KO’s) this summer in a fight that is long overdue in the UK. There has been talk about Mitchell and Murray fighting it out for ages but for some reason the two fighters were never able to get in the ring to prove who the better fighter is until now. Mitchell, 26, has long been considered to be the better fighter of the two.

However, with Mitchell’s disappointing 3rd round TKO loss to Michael Katsidis last year in May and Mitchell’s subsequent long period of inactivity, many boxing fans are now giving the 26-year-old Murray a real chance in this fight. Murray has been the busier fighter as of late, beating Andriy Kudryavtsev and Karim El Ouazghari recently, while Mitchell continued to stay out of the ring.

Frank Warren, the promoter for both Mitchell and Murray, still has to find a venue and a date for the fight. But wherever the fight ends up, it’s going to be jam packed with boxing fans wanting to see this grudge match.

Mitchell has accomplished a tad more with his career compared to Murray, beating Breidis Prescott, Walter Estrada and Ignacio Mendoza. In contrast, Murray’s best wins of his career have come against Kudryavtsev, Scott Lawton and Lee McAlister. Mitchell appears to have the better professional fighting style compared to Murray. Mitchell likes to use a lot of hitting and moving, and has good power. Murray tends to plod forward a lot, not moving his head and looking to out-tough his opponents. Murray’s fighting style will carry only so far. He’s either going to have to make some changes with his game or he’s going to start taking losses soon. It may be that Mitchell will the first fighter to expose Murray.
