Image: Malignaggi vs. Mosley looking solid for AprilBy Dan Ambrose: WBA welterweight champion Paulie Malignaggi (32-4, 7 KO’s) will likely be facing 41-year-old Shane Mosley (46-8-1, 39 KO’s). Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer likes this fight and that’s who he wants to match Malignaggi against for his next fight.

It may be the only real name he can put Malignaggi in with that will draw ratings on a cable network, and besides that Malignaggi isn’t likely going to be holding onto his title for very much longer anyway. Schaefer needs to get the best possible fight with the minimum of danger for Malignaggi.

Malignaggi said to RingTV “Seems like that’s [Malignaggi-Mosley] the plan.”

The only thing that could trip up a Malignaggi-Mosley fight is if the World Boxing Association refuse to sanction that fight due to Mosley having no ranking in any of the sanctioning bodies, as well as Mosley not having won a fight in three years since January 2009. That’s an awful long time to go between wins and if that’s not a sign of Mosley being a shot fighter I don’t know what is.

It’s imperative that Golden Boy look to get the best fight they can for Malignaggi because he’s likely to get dethroned as he fights someone like Marcos Maidana, his #2 WBA challenger. That’s not a big money fight for Malignaggi.

Malignaggi was hoping to defend his title against Ricky Hatton but things kind of fell apart when Hatton lost his comeback fight against Vyacheslav Senchenko. Hatton has no interest in fighting anymore, even though Malignaggi hinted that he’d still be interested in fighting him.

In his last fight, Malignaggi looked terrible against Pablo Cesar Cano in beating him by a controversial 12 round split decision. Malignaggi complained bitterly about the scores, feeling like he’d beaten Cano easily. It didn’t look that way, as Malignaggi was knocked down in the 11th round and he didn’t do much in the fight other than jab and shake his upper body in an odd way.
