Maccarinelli-McPhilbin is one of the worst fights I’ve ever seen

Image: Maccarinelli-McPhilbin is one of the worst fights I've ever seenBy Scott Gilfoid: Let me say it here first that Enzo Maccarinelli’s fight against British cruiserweight champion Shane McPhilbin last Friday was one of the worst fights I’ve ever had the displeasure to see. The fight was messed up so many levels that it should be erased from the record books.

I mean, look at the time keeper clanging the bell 47 seconds early with Maccarinelli having just gotten up from being knocked to the canvas and walking unsteadily Bambi legs. The fight would have ended right then and there had it been allowed to continue because McPhilin would have planted him. But that’s only part of it. How can the referee have allowed all those god awful rabbit punches from McPhilbin BEFORE the 1st round knockdown, that’s what I want to know. Earlier in the round, McPhilin teed off on Maccarinelli with series of hard rabbit shots and I bet that didn’t have him feeling too good when he was clipped later with a left hand that put him down.

As far as the rest of the action goes, the referee missed two knockdowns in the 3rd round when Maccarinelli had McPhilin on the canvas. The ref did get the knockdown of Maccarinelli in that round but messed up on the other ones. And all the rabbit punches that McPhilin landed in the 3rd and in the rest of the fight. Why didn’t the referee stop this?

Aren’t rabbit punches illegal in the UK? I give Maccarinelli credit for not losing his composure and retaliating with his own rabbit shots because he had a ton of chances to do this because McPhilbin had a bad habit of turning his back on Maccarinelli and walking away from him. That was some really amateurish stuff. And what was up with all that spitting that McPhilin was doing? In the middle of action, he’d walk over to the side of the ring and just spit. I was wondering how he was missing the people sitting there.
