Alcine whips Lemieux

Image: Alcine whips LemieuxBy Jim Dower: David Lemieux’s time as a top five middleweight contender appears to be up after Lemieux was beaten by 35-year-old former World Boxing Association junior middleweight champion Joachin Alcine (33-2-1, 19 KOs) by a 12 round majority decision on Saturday night at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Canada. The final judges’ scores were 116-112, 116-112 and 114-114.

This was supposed to have been an easy fight for Lemieux, who was coming off of a 7th round TKO loss to Marco Antonio Rubio last April. Lemieux, however, looked completely confused with what to do after the 2nd round, as he was getting hit with jabs, right hands and left hooks thrown by Alcine. By the second half of the fight, Lemieux looked tired and the power that he had earlier in the fight had completely abandoned him. Without the only asset in his arsenal, an exhausted Lemieux spent a good part of the last four rounds covering up or trying to tie Alcine up in a clinch to keep from getting hit.

Lemieux made the limited Alcine look like the champion he used to be. The loss really derails the 22-year-old Lemieux’s career and he’s going to need to make some major changes to his game if he wants to be a factor in boxing. The first thing he needs to do is move down one or two divisions. He’s no middleweight. He’s too show and his reach is that of a welterweight, if that. Lemieux needs to also work on his stamina because Alcine merely waited Lemieux out tonight and came on when Lemieux gassed out after the 5th, which is exactly what Rubio did to beat him.
