By Marcus Richardson: IBF World featherweight champion Lee Selby (26-1, 9 KOs) won a tougher than expected 12 round unanimous decision in his 5th successful title defense of his IBF featherweight belt over #11 IBF contender Eduardo Ramirez (20-1-3, 7 KOs) on Saturday night at the Copper Box Arena in London, England.

The scores were 118-110, 119-109 and 116-112. The fight was one-sided for the most part. Boxing News 24 had Selby winning by a 119-109 score.

Ramirez landed a lot of shots in the fight. He made Selby fight harder than expected. This was far from an easy fight for Selby.

Selby finished the fight strong in taking the fight to the younger Ramirez in round 12, and getting the better of him. Selby looked like the younger and fitter fighter at the end of the fight. Ramirez was exhausted from having to chase Selby around the ring.

Ramirez came in over the 126 lb. weight limit on Friday at the weigh-in. It’s possible the strain of having to make weight took a lot out of Ramirez.

Ramirez, 24, pressured the 30-year-old Selby the entire time, but it wasn’t effective pressure. Much of the time, Ramirez was coming forward and missing with his shots. When Ramirez did let his hands go by throwing lots of punches in rounds 3, 9 and 11, he gave Selby problems. If anything, Ramirez created a blueprint for Selby’s next opponent Joshua Warrington to follow. Throwing single shots at Selby doesn’t work, and neither does loading up on punches. Ramirez tried to load up at times, and he was ineffective. What worked the best for Ramirez was when he was pressuring Selby hard, staying close to him and throwing massive amounts of punches. If Warrington can follow that approach against Selby, he’ll have a chance to win.

Selby wants to fight Warrington and Carl Frampton in 2018. If Selby fights like he did tonight, he’ll beat both of those fighters next year. Frampton would have had problems if he’d been inside the ring with Selby tonight. The way that Selby constantly moves around the ring throwing shots from different angles makes him very hard to hit. Frampton would have to attack Selby at quick time and throw a lot of punches for him to have a chance of beating him. Just going by how Frampton looked in his last fight against Horacio Garcia, I don’t think he wins the fight. If the fight takes place in Belfast, Frampton can win even if he fails to shine. Selby is fighting at a high level though, and he’d give Frampton a lot of problems with his height, reach and his movement.
