Klitschko vs. Sosnowski: How easily will Vitali beat Albert?

By Dave Lahr: WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko (39-2, 37 KO’s) will be making his fourth defense of his World Boxing Council heavyweight title later on this month on May 29th against Albert Sosnowski (45-2-1, 27 KO’s) at the Veltins Arena, Gelsenkirchen, Nordrhein-Westfalen, in Germany. Sosnowski’s record is impressive, except that almost all the wins have come against 2nd tier heavyweights. At 6’2″, 228, Sosnowski really has his work cut out for him against the 6’7″ Klitschko.

This is a fight that on paper looks to be a really bad mismatch. Vitali obviously deserves an easy fight after taking on four tough fighters after coming back from his four year retirement in 2008. Strangely enough, despite picking Sosnowski, a fighter that is little known, the tickets are selling well in Germany. I guess it just goes to show you how popular Vitali and Wladimir Klitschko are in Germany. Sosnowski is a fighter with average power, poor foot movement and almost zero defense. In other words, he’s tailor made for Vitali.

Think of a poor version of Chris Arreolo without the power and even worse mobility and you’ve got Sosnowski. I’m afraid that unless Klitschko carries him for six or to eight rounds, this fight could be over in one round. That’s all well and good if your Vitali, but there’s a lot of German boxing fans that will be paying their hard earned money to come see Vitali fight in Gelsenkirchen and it might not be pleasing to have to witness a quick blowout. However, when you have two fighters that as far apart in talent as Vitali and Sosnowski are there’s really not much choice unless Vitali carries the guy for a few rounds to let the fans see him in action.

This is why Vitali would have been better off choosing someone like Odlanier Solis, the former Olympic Gold Medalist from Cuba, to fight instead. It least that would have been an interesting fight because of Solis’ hand speed and power. Of course, if the now 270+ Solis keeps getting bigger (and I’m not talking muscle) then it won’t be all that interesting to see Vitali fight him either.

I really don’t give Sosnowski much chance in this fight other than maybe landing a few shots every now and then. Mostly, I see Sosnowski serving as a punching bag for as long as this fight lasts. He’s just too slow and doesn’t have the speed to go after Vitali in any real way. Sadly, this fight is going to be painfully boring to watch. I just hope Vitali doesn’t wipe the guy out too quickly otherwise there will be a lot of unhappy German fans.
