Khan vs. Maidana analysis

By Muizz Ali: As a boxing fan and having many boxing fan friends around myself, I talk about potential match ups. One match up that comes to everybody’s mind is WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan (23-1, 17 KO’s) vs WBA light welterweight interim champion Marcos Maidana (28-1, 27 KO’s). This is an interesting fight mainly because of Khans weak chin and Maidana’s punching power.

I believe that Khan will, would and could box rings around Maidana and even stop him. The reason for this is because of Amir’s left jab and straight Left. This punch will keep Maidana guessing about the next incoming shot and seat him on the canvas. Khan has much more speed than Victor Ortiz and he has decent power. Khan would be told to keep his guard up and attack from the outside because of Maidana’s Power.

Khan would hit him with the left jab and then tag him with several punches before Marcos can react. As soon an Maidana is hurt, Khan would use his blazing speed to stop him, but Khan would be aware of the power and might be reluctant to plant his feet. Khan would be the most skillful, pure and speediest boxer Maidana will have ever faced, but luckily for Khan, he has faced someone with thunderous punches and seen the wrath of leaving your chin up.

Freddie Roach, Khan’s trainer, and Khan might see similarities between Breidis Prescott, who destroyed Khan in one round in 2008, and Maidiana such as attacking and leaving their guard open for a uppercut or straight left. Roach will likely study this fight over and over again and make a plan so perfect that Khan would do a number on Maidana. I believe that Khan will stop Maidana just because of the fact that Maidana is a crude slugger.

But watching Timothy Bradley or Devon Alexander, I don’t think that Khan would be lucky in that fight until he has more experience. As a Khan admirer and critic, I think that he is still not ready for Bradley or Devon because they have the better opponent experience. Once he has fought another bunch of boxers, such as Marcos Maidana, Kendall Holt or Juan Diaz, I believe he will be ready to show the world that he is the best light welterweight in the world. And fighting the names I just mentioned would show that he can fight power punchers like Maidana and speedy fighters like Holt and educated pressure fighters like Diaz and win.
