Khan vs. Collazo & Adrien Broner vs. Carlos Molina on Mayweather-Maidana undercard

broner237By Allan Fox: It’s looking like the two biggest undercard fights on Floyd Mayweather Jr’s May 3rd undercard will involve Amir Khan fighting Luis Collazo (35-5, 18 KO’s) and Adrien Broner (27-1, 22 KO’s) facing the light welterweight Carlos Molina (17-1-1, 7 KO’s) instead of the previously mentioned John Molina, according to Fighthype. These appear to be the two biggest fights on Mayweather’s undercard.

Carlos Molina is not to be confused with IBF junior middleweight champion Carlos Molina. That’s a different fighter and a far superior one than the 140lb guy that goes by the same name. The light welterweight version of Carlos Molina is the same one that Khan stopped in the 10th round in December of 2012. Molina hasn’t fought since then, and it’s now going on a year and half since he last saw action in the ring.

I’m sure Mayweather doesn’t have much control over who Khan and Broner will be fighting on this card, otherwise he’d likely insist that they both fight good opposition that would help increase the pay-per-view sales for the fight. Broner-Molina and Khan-Collazo are not fights that will significantly change anyone’s mind about whether to purchase the Mayweather-Maidana PPV card on Showtime.

Those are more like mismatches that are tilted heavily in favor of Khan and Broner. The Khan-Collazo fight has a chance of being competitive depending on how rusty Khan is and whether he makes the mistake of getting close enough to where Collazo can land his right hook, which is his best weapon by far.

Collazo is only capable of throwing the punch with good power in close, so Khan will be fine as long as he stays at a distance and pecks away at Collazo for 12 rounds. Collazo has good inside fighting skills, and that’s an area where Khan will need to stay out of.

Broner should be able to stop Carlos Molina without too many problems. Molina is slow, small and not too powerful. If Broner can’t beat him then he needs to hang up the gloves because there won’t be anywhere for him to go. The idea of Broner being matched up against Molina instead of a good light welterweight seems to suggest that there are some serious concerns with his promoter about what he’s capable of doing at this weight.

If Broner was really considered to be the next big thing in boxing, do you really think that Golden Boy Promotions or his adviser Al Haymon would be matching him against Carlos Molina. There must be some serious doubts about his talent level for them to go this far down the food chain to find someone they think he can beat and look good against on Mayweather’s card. They might want to bring him back to lightweight if they’re not sure if he can hang with a good fringe light welterweight contender.

Golden Boy will need to keep Broner away from Danny Garcia once they start matching him against good 140lb fighters. Lamont Peterson also might be a step too far for him.
