By Jim Dower: Roy Jones Jr. (62-9, 45 KOs) may have seen his great career end tonight with him getting knocked out cold in the 4th round by his bigger opponent Enzo Maccarinelli (41-7, 33 KOs) at the VTB Arena in Moscow, Russia. Maccarinelli landed a scorching right hand to the head of Jones in the 4th that knocked him unconscious in putting him down on his face. The referee stopped the contest immediately upon seeing how hurt Jones was.

Maccarinelli knocked Jones down twice in the 4th round with right hands. The first knockdown came from a powerful right uppercut to the head that put Jones down on all fours. Jones got up with an embarrassed looking on his face, but it was clear that he was badly hurt and wasn’t going to be able to make it out of the ring unless he held on. Jones chose to fight it out rather than to try and ride out of the round. That was a clear mistake though, as Maccarinelli pounced on the badly hurt Jones in landing to the head and body. Maccarinelli had Jones against the ropes when he finished him with a right to the head.

Jones fought a poor fight by failing to get off the ropes to keep the action in the center of the ring. Facing a big puncher like Maccarinelli, Jones should have been using the entire ring to keep out of range of his big shots.

#3 WBA middleweight contender Dmitry Chudinov (17-1-2, 11 KOs) defeated German fighter Benjamin Simon (26-3, 25 KOs) by a 4th round knockout on Saturday night at the VTB Arena, in Moscow, Russia.

Chudinov, 29, dropped Simon with a hard right hand in the 4th. Simon was too hurt to get back to his feet. The referee Irakli Malazonia halted the fight at 1:12 of the round.

Chudinov battered Simon in every round of the fight with his hard shots. Chudinov didn’t show much in terms of hand speed, but his punching power was excellent.

Earlier this year, Chudinov was stopped in the 12th round by Chris Eubank Jr. last February.

7 WBA heavyweight contender Alexander Ustinov (33-1, 24 KOs) chopped down 37-year-old Russian journeyman Konstantin Airich (22-15-2, 18 KOs) by a 5th round knockout.

The 39-year-old Ustinov caught Airich with a big left hook at the end of the 5th round that sent him flat on his back on the canvas. The fight was then halted at 2:59 of the round.

Ustinov had his way with the slower, smaller Airich in this fight. The 6’7″ Ustinov used his right hand and left hook to slowly soften up Airich throughout the fight. Ustinov showed good punching power, but it wasn’t explosive stuff. He was throwing really slow shots that Airich wasn’t able to get out of the way of.

If Ustinov can keep winning, he could find himself getting a world title shot in the near future against WBA “regular” champion Ruslan Chagaev or WBA “Super World” heavyweight champion Tyson Fury.
