jacobs555By Jim Dower: WBA “regular” middleweight champion Daniel Jacobs (31 -1, 28 KOs) gave former WBO 160lb champion Peter “Kid Chocolate” Quillin (32-1-1, 23 KOs) his first loss of his career in stopping him in the 1st round of their “Battle of Brooklyn” fight on Showtime Championship Boxing from the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

Jacobs hurt the 32-year-old Quillin with a hard right hand to the head in the opening seconds of the fight. Jacobs then flurried on Quillin until staggering him with a big right hand to the head. The referee then stepped in and halted the fight when it was clear that Quillin was too hurt to continue.

WBA “regular” featherweight champion Jesus Cuellar (28-1, 21 KOs) head onto his title in beating Jonathan Oquendo (26-5, 16 KOs) by a fairly one-sided 12 round unanimous decision. The final judges’ scores were 116-111, 116-111, 120-107 verdict.

Cuellar came forward all night long, using his superior punching power to take the fight to the weaker but game Oquendo. In the 4th round, Cuellar knocked Oquendo down. Other than that, it was a pretty uneventful fight without dramatics. Cuellar does well when he’s matched against guys like Oquendo.

Cuellar is a good fighter, but he’s more of the weak link among the five featherweight champions. You can say that the other featherweight champions – Vasyl Lomachenko, Gary Russell Jr., Leo Santa Cruz and Lee Selby – are all better fighters than Cuellar.

In a tougher than expected fight for Chris Algieri (21-2, 8 KOs), he was forced to battle hard to defeat the tough B-level fighter Erick Bone (16-3, 8 KOs) by a 10 round unanimous decision.

Algieri was given credit for a knockout in the 8th round, when Bone stripped over his left foot as Algieri was throwing a body shot.

The final judges’ scores were 95-94, 97-92 and 97-92.

Algieri was the busier fighter during the first three quarters of the fight. In the last quarter, Algieri seemed to fade a little bit, and it enabled Bone to get the better of the action. Algieri made a mistake of electing to fight Bone on the inside during the second half of the contest, and this was clearly a mistake because inside fighting is Bone’s specialty. Algieri’s corner needed to tell him to take the action to the outside, but they failed to do so.

Algieri is going to need to use more of his boxing skills in the future when he faces the harder punchers in the welterweight division because he doesn’t have the punching power to beat the better fighters by slugging with them.

#10 WBA, #14 IBF, #14 WBC light heavyweight contender Marcus Browne (17-0, 13 KOs) kept his unbeaten record intact with a 4th round knockout victory over Francisco Sierra (27-10-1, 24 KOs) on Saturday night on the undercard of the Peter Quillin vs. Daniel Jacobs card on Showtime from the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

The fight was halted in the 4th round eut to a cut that Sierra suffered on his face.

Light heavyweight Joe Smith Jr. (20-1, 16 KOs) defeated Will Rosinsky (19-3, 10 KOs) by a 10 round unanimous decision. The final judges’ scores were 98-92, 97-93 and 96-94.

35-year-old former WBA junior middleweight champion Yuri Foreman (33-2, 9 KOs) won his first fight in two years in defeating Lenwood Dozier (9-10-1, 4 KOs) by a narrow eight round unanimous decision. The final judges’ scores were 77-75, 77-75 and 77-75. The fight was closer than it should have been because Foreman was a far better fighter than Dozier back in the best years of his career. It wasn’t a good sign that Foreman had to struggle to defeat a limited fighter like Dozier.

Foreman might want to rethink his comeback idea. He doesn’t have the punching power to compete against the better fighters at junior middleweight.

Unbeaten cruiserweight Luis Garcia (13-0, 10 KOs) defeated Willie Williams (14-11-2, 4 KOs) by a 1st round knockout in a scheduled 6 round fight. Garcia knocked Williams down with a left to the head. Referee Danny Schiavone stopped the fight at 1:03.

In light welterweight action, John Hernandez (6-1, 1 KOs) defeated Jack Grady (0-3-1) by a 4 round unanimous decision. The final judges’ scores were 40-36, 40-36 and 40-36.
