By Dan Ambrose: Isaac ‘Pitbull’ Cruz weighed in at 134 1/2 lbs, and his opponent Giovanni Cabrera came in at 134 1/4  pounds during Friday’s weigh-in for their WBA & WBC lightweight title eliminator on Saturday night.

Cruz-Cabrera a the chief support bout on the Errol Spence Jr vs. Terence Crawford on Showtime PPV. The undercard fights begin at 8:00 p.m. ET.

During the face-off, Cruz (24-2-1 17 KOs) stepped to Cabrera (21-0, 7 KOs) in an aggressive manner, perhaps to show him that he was not afraid because 27-year-old Seattle, Washington native had trash-talked him pretty fiercely during Thursday’s final press conference, and he clearly got the better of it.

#3 WBC, #5 IBF, #5 WBA & #5 WBO Pitbull Cruz needs a win over Cabrera to keep alive his desperate hopes of getting a rematch with Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis.

Cruz hasn’t hidden the fact that he only wants that second fight with Tank, which has led to much criticism from boxing fans because it shows that his focus is only on money and not on the sport in wanting to capture world titles and achieve a legacy.

It is worse that Cruz has turned down fights against Ryan Garcia, Shakur Stevenson, and Devin Haney.

Presumably, Pitbull Cruz’s management has vetted Giovanni and deemed him a non-threat, but if they’re wrong bout this, it could be the end of Isaac’s dream of hitting the lotto a second time with a rematch with Gervonta Davis.

Losing to Giovanni would be almost impossible for the short 5’4″ Isaac Cruz to come back from because the only way he could get a second fight with Gervonta under that scenario is if he were to beat some of the killers in the lightweight division from this list:

– Shakur Stevenson
– Frank Martin
– Vasily Lomachenko
– Keyshawn Davis
– Raymond Muratalla
– William Zepeda
– Maxi Hughes
– Floyd Schofield

Nonito Donaire vs. Alejandro Santiago – weigh-in results

Former four-division world champion Nonito Donaire (42-7, 28 KOs) weighed in at 117¼ lbs, and his opponent Alexandro Santiago (27-3-5, 14 KOs) weighed in at 117½ lbs. The vacant WBC bantamweight title will be at stake.

For the 40-year-old Donaire, this is a chance for him to restart his career after being blown out by Naoya Inoue in a second round knockout defeat last year.

Many boxing fans figured that it was over for Donaire after that loss, yet here he is in a great position to win the vacant WBC title to capture another belt.

If Donaire wins, he says he wants to go after the other three titles at 118 to become the undisputed champion at bantamweight. It could take a while for Donaire to accomplish that goal.
