Holyfield-Williams: Should Evander get a title shot against Haye or one of the Klitschko brothers if he wins?

By Dave Lahr: Former heavyweight champion Evander Holyfield (43-10-2, 28 KO’s) is stubbornly committed to fighting for and trying to capture all the heavyweight titles before he retires from boxing. Holyfield is now 48, and his skills have badly eroded to the point where he doesn’t look anything like he once did. On Saturday, Holyfield is facing 38-year-old Sherman Williams in a pay-per-view card at the The Greenbrier, in White Shulphur Springs, in West Virginia. Holyfield should win this fight without any problem, but that’s not the point.

Of course Holyfield will beat a B level fighter like Williams, but Holyfield wants more than that. He wants to face Haye and the Klitschkos so that he can try and unify all of the titles before hanging up the gloves. Holyfield doesn’t look like he’s going to go about getting a title shot the correct way by taking on one of the top contenders like Alexander Povetkin or Denis Boytsov to get highly ranked in the top 5 of the heavyweight division.

As such, I think one of the Klitschkos or Haye needs to take mercy on Holyfield and give him his shot at the title. At least this will shut Holyfield up and let him see how hopeless his dream is. What I see happening is Holyfield getting brutally battered and taken out within three rounds by Haye or the Klitschkos. Surely, once Holyfield gets beaten up and quickly stopped, he’ll have the presence of mind to hang up his gloves for good and save himself needless punishment in future fights while chasing a title shot.
