Image: Haye-Ruiz: Can David give John the beating of his career?By Peter Wells: In David Haye’s first defence of his World Boxing Association Heavyweight title he has to take on a fighter who’s seen it all and is as tough as they come. John Ruiz a boring brawler who ruins fights and frustrates opponents into defeat. John Ruiz is a tough American who has a great pedigree. He has beaten Evander Holyfield and twice been close against Nikolay Valuev. He may not be classed as a big puncher but he has succeeded in flooring Holyfield and that isn’t easy.

David Haye hasn’t got an easy opponent at all, but in front of his home crowd it should give him a much more cosy feeling when he enters the ring. The cool Londoner is a huge icon now and with the tickets sold out and surely PPV numbers are high. Ruiz has had a long 20 year career and a big defeat here would be an end to it. He is hoping to add his name to the short list of Evander Holyfield and Muhammad Ali as the only fighters to have won the WBA Heavyweight strap three times.

Haye would like to give his fans a big night to remember after the boring fight in Germany against giant Russian Nikolay Valuev. Haye won’t be able to destroy Ruiz like he did to weaker Enzo Maccarenelli but a stoppage is on the cards.

I see two scenarios here, the first one being Haye opens up early and even if Ruiz has a good chin or not, he’s not superman and Haye can knock him out inside the first 5 rounds. The other one is that David boxes well early, coming in with little bursts before opening up late and getting a late stoppage. I see the first one being more likely, Haye will start cautiously for 2 rounds and then will start to bang away, with a variety of punches a after 2 knockdowns the referee will stop the fight in the 5th.
