Guerrero-Maidana: Marcos has the opportunity to embarrass Guerrero in front of his own home crowd

By Jason Kim: Robert Guerrero (29-1, 18 KO’s) is going into his August 27th fight against knockout artist Marcos Maidana (30-2, 27 KO’s) as the favorite to win when the two punchers slug it out at Guerrero’s home arena at the HP Pavilion, San Jose, California.

This may not be such a big advantage for Guerrero, though, because the last time he fought at home in San Jose, Guerrero struggled badly against Daud Cino Yordan in a fight that was stopped in two round due to a cut that Guerrero suffered on his forehead from a clash of heads. However, enough of the fight went by to show that Guerrero was not comfortable with Yordan’s power and his relentless attacks.

Things were looking bad for Guerrero at the time the fight was stopped and he didn’t exactly protest the stoppage. Maidana hits even harder than Yordan does and will be attacking Guerrero in the same vicious way. For a fighter that is used to being the stronger puncher, Guerrero is going to have to come to terms early on that he’s in with a guy that can punch even harder than him and who doesn’t give up when things are going badly.

Guerrero has been facing a lot of fighters recently that look to have mentally quit when things turned sour for them. Maidana isn’t that way. He keeps coming and won’t stop even when he’s behind in a fight the way he was in bouts against Amir Khan and Victor Ortiz. Guerrero doesn’t have the hand speed or size that Khan had nor does have the power and the hand speed that Ortiz brought to the table.

Guerrero is light version of both of those guys, which is why Guerrero is going to have to raise his game a couple of notches if he doesn’t want to be embarrassed by Maidana in front of his own home crowd. Guerrero doesn’t like to be attacked hard and looks uncomfortable when he’s taking punishment in return. Guerrero can dish it out but if you return fire the way that Yordan and Orlando Salido did in fights against Guerrero, things rapidly go down hill for Guerrero. He loses his confidence and becomes very average.
