Groves vs. Ndiaye: George needs to show a TON of improvement in this fight

groves45By Scott Gilfoid: George Groves (16-0, 12 KO’s) will be looking to picked up the vacant EBU title that James DeGale cast off when he faces Mouhamed Ali Ndiaye (22-1, 13 KO’s) on March 16th on the Nathan Cleverly vs. Robin Krasniqi fight card at the Wembley Arena in London, UK.

This is also the card that has WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns facing IBF 135 pound champion Miguel Vazquez in what is easily the best perhaps the only good fight on the entire career unless you’re into watching mismatches.

Groves, 24, wants the European Boxing Union strap for god knows what reason. To me, it’s like going backwards to primary school. What a waste. If Groves is supposed to be moving forward with his career towards a world title then why is he going backwards trying to pick up trinkets of no real worth? But then again after seeing his dreadful performance against Glen Johnson last December, I can kind of understand the need for Groves to take his career in the slow lane and go backwards instead of forwards.

Groves like he had no sense against Johnson. Groves just jumped on him and tried to overwhelm him with punches.

It was pretty poorly planned out because it wasn’t working and Groves ended up getting staggered a couple of times before running out of gas, and having to play it safe in the later rounds. I don’t know why Adam Booth, Groves’ trainer, didn’t tell him to box Johnson or at least get him to stop slugging because he didn’t have the power to do anything against Johnson.

I think this EBU strap might as good as it gets for the 24-year-old Groves because I can’t see him being able to compete with the likes of Arthur Abraham or any of the other world champions. I hate to even imagine the thought of Groves fighting Andre Ward someday. That would be such a terrible mismatch, and it would be sad to see the over-matched Groves take a pounding against him.

Groves will beat Ndiaye, but then again that doesn’t say much because Ndiaye isn’t someone that I consider world class.
