golovkinmedia-1By Allan Fox: Whether Gabriel Rosado (21-5, 13 KO’s) can win next Saturday night on January 19th in his fight against WBA World middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (24-0, 21 KO’s) comes down to whether Rosado can take Golovkin’s huge punching power. It’s basically as simple as that.

If Rosado can handle Golovkin’s power he’s going to have a decent chance at winning the fight. That’s not to say that he necessarily will because Golovkin will still likely get the attention of the boxing judges with his hurtful punches and cleaner landing shots.

However, Rosado will have a chance of winning if he can take the fight to the scorecards because he’ll be able to land a lot of his own shots and he could impressive some of the judges that way.

Golovkin did not look good in beating Kassim Ouma four fights ago by a 10th round knockout in June 2011. Golovkin basically walked Ouma down, taking his best shots in the process before stopping him in the 10th in a grueling fight. Ouma took a terrible beating in that fight and he hasn’t fought since.

Golovkin has improved a great deal since then with trainer Abel Sanchez, and he’s able to do a lot of things that he couldn’t do previously like fight on the inside. Golovkin is now a superb body puncher, and he’s relentless when he gets an opponent against the ropes. Rosado will have to avoid that at all costs because he can’t afford to get blasted apart at close range by Golovkin.

Grzegorz Proksa, Golovkin’s last opponent, foolishly attempted to fight Golovkin off the ropes and he ended up getting knocked down three times and stopped in the 5th. Proksa’s a bigger puncher than Rosado, yet he was unable to do anything with him and took a beating.
Rosado thinks that Golovkin is going to have to worry about his own power because he fancies himself as much of a puncher as Golovkin. If that turns out to be true then Golovkin will have problems but it doesn’t look that way in looking at some of Rosado’s recent fights. He does punch hard but not abnormally hard.
