Golovkin vs. Geale in the works

golovkin43By Scott Gilfoid: With the previously scheduled fight between former IBF/WBA middleweight champion Daniel Geale and Matthew Macklin now dead in the water, a fight between Geale and WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (29-0, 26 KO’s) is reportedly in the works. Golovkin’s promoter Tom Loeffler of K2 Promotions had been in negotiations with Top Rank for a fight against super middleweight Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., but the negotiations have gone nowhere and Golovkin and his team are moving on.

Geale is moving on as well rather than looking to reschedule a fight against Macklin. Their fight was supposed to take place on the Bryant Jennings vs. Mike Perez heavyweight clash on May 25th, but the card was cancelled following a shoulder injury that Perez suffered while training for the Jennings fight.

“We’re in negotiations with Golovkin and HBo to try and put the Geale-Golovkin fight together,” said Geale’s manager Bill Treacy via AAP.

There’s also a chance that Geale could wind up fighting the winner of the May 31st rematch between IBF middleweight champion Felix Sturm and Sam Soliman. However, that’s a fight that Geale will have to wait on, and it’s unknown whether he’ll get a shot at the winner of that fight or not. But Golovkin, that’s a night that he can have because there’s interest from Golovkin’s team.

As far as the Geale-Golovkin fight goes, it’s not really a great fight or even close to being a great one. HBO will still televise it, but it’s more of a step down from Golovkin’s recent fight against Curtis Stevens and not a great fight or anything close to it. Geale was handled well by Darren Barker last year in August in losing his IBF 160 pound title by a 12 round split decision, and that fight told you all you need to know about Geale.

Losing to Barker pretty much means that Geale will be little more than cannon fodder for Golovkin if and when that fight is put together. The fight won’t tell us anything about Golovkin because Geale has zero power, and he mainly just hops around the ring in trying not to get hit. I’d much rather see Golovkin fight someone with a little bit of talent like Daniel Jacobs
