fury3by Scott Gilfoid: Heavyweight contender Tyson Fury (21-0, 15 KO’s) had to get up off the deck to stop the much, much smaller 210 lb. Steve Cunningham (25-6, 12 KO’s) in the 7th round on Saturday night at the Madison Square Garden, New York.

The end came when Fury trapped Cunningham against the ropes and shoved him hard when he attempted to escape. Fury then nailed Cunningham with a short right uppercut followed by a nice right hook that put Cunningham down on the canvas for the 10 round.

In the 2nd round, Cunningham dropped Fury with a peach of a right hand to the head that put Fury down on his backside. Unfortunately for Cunningham, he wasn’t able to finish Fury off because he was too tired to throw more than a handful of punches. Had it been a normal sized heavyweight with better stamina than the heavily muscled Cunningham, Fury likely would have been stopped in that round.

Cunningham was able to catch Fury with big shots every now and then but he wasn’t able to throw enough punches to dominate.

In the 5th, Fury lost a point for the use of the head when the two fighters were in close. In that round, Fury began to take control of the fight as Cunningham began to tire and spend more time on the ropes. Fury was able to maul him and land some heavy shots that clearly bothered Cunningham.

Fury’s cousin Hughie Fury (2-0, 2 KO’s) picked up his second KO with an easy 1st round knockout win over a badly over-matched Alex Rozman (1-1, 1 KO’s). Fury knocked Rozman down three times in the fight with right hands. After the third knockdown the fight was halted by the referee at 2:26 the round. The first knockdown came from a over-hand right. Rozman got up and fought sloppily and was knocked down with a short right uppercut. After the action resumed, Fury dropped Rozman for the third and final time with a right to the head.

I thought Hughie looked better than Tyson because he shows better hand speed and defensive skills. He’s a lot faster on his feet than Tyson, but he’s still far from a great fighter.

Other boxing results on the card:

Curtis Stevens UD 8 Derrick Finley
Adam Kownacki TKO 2 Calbert Lewis
Hughie Fury TKO 1 Alex Rozman
Karl Dargan TKO 2 Edward Valdez
Josh Harris TKO 5 Sevdail Sherifi
