Fury defeats Abell, but looks horrible

fury664(Tyson Fury seen here hitting Joey Abell the first of two times while he was down on the canvas in the 4th round) By Scott Gilfoid: A fat looking Tyson Fury (22-0, 16 KO’s) stopped Joey Abell (29-8, 28 KO’s) in the 4th round on Saturday night at the Copper Box Arena in London, UK. Fury, fighting in a dirty manner, knocked Abell down four times in the fight. He dropped Abell down twice in the 3rd and two more times in the 4th round.

Fury got away twice with hitting Abell while he was on the canvas. I can understand the referee messing up and letting Fury get away with hitting Abell once while he was down, but twice? That was so, so sad. I thought Fury should have been disqualified after he hit Abell for the second time after he was down.

Fury was hit with some really hard left hands from Abell in all of the rounds. With the way that Abell was landing shots, it was hard to picture Fury being able to compete against a heavyweight with some real power and talent like Deontay Wilder. I think Fury would have been knocked out in the 1st round had he been in with Deontay tonight instead of this guy.

In the 3rd round, Fury hit Abell low on the break, and the referee let it slide by just giving Fury a warning. After the action resumed, Abell landed some huge lefts to the head that had Fury backing up and looking kind of shaky.

After the fight, Fury’s promoter Mick Hennessy said that he wants to get another tuneup fight for Fury. He doesn’t want Fury to go into the Chisora fight straightaway. As fat and rusty as Fury looked tonight, I can see why he would want Fury to have another tuneup fight.

It was kind of stunning how out of shape Fury looked. He looked like he was a good 20 pounds overweight, and there was no way that Fury should have been fighting looking as fat as he was tonight.

Other boxing results on the card:

Thomas Stalker pts 6 Dan Carr
Hughie Fury TKO 2 Matthew Greer
Lewis Pettitt pts 6 Elemir Rafael
Michael Grant pts 6 Billy Morgan
