Froch vs. Kessler 2: Carl could lose even worse this time

froch922By Scott Gilfoid: The timing of the rematch between IBF super middleweight champion Carl Froch (30-2, 22 KO’s) and Mikkel Kessler (46-2, 35 KO’s) isn’t good for the 35-year-old Froch in his May 25th fight against the Dane at the O2 Arena in London, UK.

It would have been much better for Froch to be facing Kessler immediately after Froch’s defeat at the hands of WBA super middleweight champion Andre Ward in December 2011, because Froch has had two easy fights since then and he’s now under the crazy belief that he can beat Kessler by throwing lots of punches in combinations.

Froch didn’t do this in their fight three years ago in 2010 when Froch was beaten by a 12 round unanimous decision. He thinks the way to defeat Kessler in their second fight is to jump on him the way that he did against Lucian Bute and Yusaf Mack, and basically snow them under with punches.

That tactic, if Froch uses it, is going to get him knocked clean out because if he just flurries on Kessler, he’s going to run into one of Kessler’s big shots and end up getting hurt. Froch likes to say he has a good beard, but we’ve seen him hurt against Jermain Taylor, Andre Dirrell, and Andre Ward.

We’ve seen Froch staggered, and we’ve seen him taste canvas. But that was back when Froch didn’t have these notions planted in his head that the way to fight was to flurry on his opponents.

I can only imagine what Dirrell, Taylor and Ward would have done to Froch had he jumped on them and started throwing punches in every direction to try and get them out of there early. Those guys would have put Froch down over and over again with him fighting like he’d lost his senses completely.

I hope for Froch’s sake he’s able to shift into a plan B if his plan A fails to work against Kessler. I’d hate to see Froch get knocked out cold by Kessler in front of Froch’s own British fans in London on May 25th.

I can see Froch being too hurt to use a plan B because he’ll likely run into something big from Kessler in the first couple of rounds with him using a primitive caveman fighting style. In that case, I think we could see Froch resort to a plan C, which would be a full scale retreat as he runs from Kessler to keep from getting knocked out.
