Image: Donaire-Vazquez Jr. set for Feb. 4th in TexasBy Eric Thomas: After winning titles in the flyweight and bantamweight divisions, Nonito Donaire (27-1, 18 KO’s) will be moving up in weight to take on former WBO super bantamweight champion Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. (21-1-1, 18 KO’s) in what Donaire hopes to be an easy fight on February 4th at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.

Donaire, 5’7”, will have a two inch height advantage over Vazquez and he hopes that he’ll be able to use his superior size to dominate him. Whenever a fighter moves up in weight like Donaire is doing here, you really don’t know how they’ll respond. Thus far, Donaire has shown the ability to dominate fighters in the 5’2” to 5’4” range. He’s always had the height advantage over his opposition and it will be the case in this fight as well.

But Vazquez is a slugger and likes to turn his fights into a war. Donaire has shown that he can dish it out but he looks really vulnerable when he’s taking shots in return. If Vazquez is going to win this fight he’s going to have to get to Donaire early while he still has fuel in the gas tank, because Vazquez wore down badly in his 12th round TKO loss to Jorge Arce last May, and Donaire is good enough to put similar pressure on Donaire.

The only question is can Donaire take the kinds of shots that Vazquez is going to be hitting him with. Donaire is going to have to have a good chin because Vazquez Jr. won’t collapse in the first couple of rounds like a lot of Donaire’s opposition at super flyweight and bantamweight.
