Image: Donaire-Narvaez: The next Pacquiao shows his stuff on October 22ndBy Chris Williams: WBC/WBO bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire (26-1, 18 KO’s) defends his title for the first titles for the first time on October 22nd against the short 5’3″, 36-year-old WBO super flyweight champion Omar Andres Narvaez (35-0-2, 19 KO’s) at the MSG-Wamu Theater in New York.

Narvaez is moving up from the super flyweight division to take on the bigger, taller and younger Donaire. It’s very disappointing that Donaire’s promoters from Top Rank had to pick a guy who fights in the division below Donaire for his next opponent instead at least someone from his own division or higher.

It’s never a good sign when you see a champion fighting guys from the division below their own. I see that as a cherry picking move and one to assure that Donaire is the bigger guy in this fight.

Donaire is considered by many to be the next Manny Pacquiao. I don’t agree. I think Donaire is much better skilled than Pacquiao is now and light years ahead of him in talent when Pacquiao was 28. However, Donaire lacks the ruggedness needed for him to be the next Pacquiao.

I can’t see Donaire moving up to featherweight, super featherweight or lightweight and having the kind of success he’d had here. Juan Manuel Lopez, Orlando Salido and Yuriorkis Gamboa would destroy Donaire at featherweight and Adrien Broner would do a number on him at super featherweight. And at lightweight, WBA champion Brandon Rios would knock Donaire out with ease.

But I do see Donaire dominating the smaller Narvaez on October 22nd. Narvarez doesn’t good even at his own weight, and it’s going to be a mismatch in him moving up to fight Donaire, who is four inches taller than him at 5’7″.
