Image: DeGale vs. Wilczewski, Cleverly vs. Bellew: One good fight and one mismatchBy Scott Gilfoid: On October 15th, we’re going to see two different type fights where on one hand we’ll be seeing a talented fighter in James DeGale (10-1, 8 KO’s) vying for another title in his attempts to win the EBU super middleweight belt off of champion Piotr Wilczewski (29-1, 10 KO’s) in a fight that promises to be an exciting one while it lasts.

And then we’ve got what passes for the main event between WBO light heavyweight champion Nathan Cleverly (22-0, 11 KO’s) vs. a fringe contender dug up from near the bottom of the WBO rankings Tony Bellew (16-0, 10 KO’s) at the Echo Arena in Liverpool, England. This fight will be nothing like the exciting DeGale-Wilczewski bout.

It’s going to be primitive as can be type fight matching two come forward type limited guys that have little speed, little defense and little in the way of talent in estimation. I see Cleverly as a poor man’s version of Carl Froch, but without the power, the long arms or the quick arm punches. Oh yeah, Froch has a better chin and better defensive.

Bellew has chance in this fight, and basically in the equivalent of David Haye with his ability to talk up a fight and create a lot of noise during press conferences. When he’s actually fighting and not just talking, Bellew is nothing special. He’s not a huge puncher, and doesn’t have much speed or boxing ability. He’s just someone that has done well on the domestic level circuit. Cleverly should be able to make him look silly, even though Cleverly is nothing special either.

But DeGale is going to be the real diamond shining on this night. He’s going to show his amazing skills against Wilczewski, beat him up and take his belt from him. DeGale will be the ones savior of this card and will help boxing fans forget about the Cleverly vs. Bellew mismatch. Hopefully that fight will be over quickly so that we don’t get the amateur hour stuff tainting the DeGale fight against Wilczewski.
