Dawson-Hopkins: Bernard looks afraid of Chad

Image: Dawson-Hopkins: Bernard looks afraid of ChadBy Dan Ambrose: If you haven’t noticed already, WBC light heavyweight champion Bernard Hopkins is looking less than 100% confident in his recent video interviews leading up to his October 15th fight against two-time light heavyweight champion Chad Dawson (30-1, 17 KO’s).

Although Hopkins is action like he’s ready to take the fight and dominate like usual, he doesn’t appear ready for this fight. He looks like he’s not at all ready to take on a tough fighter like Dawson.

Hopkins only now realizes that he may have bit off more than he can chew in this fight. He’s dealing with someone that’s not only a lot younger than him at 29 compared to the 46-year-old Hopkins, but also someone with a ton of hand speed. Hopkins has been careful to fight guys that are pretty much slow or shot in the last four years, and Dawson is going to be a rude awakening for Hopkins.

A motivated Dawson is probably going to be much too good for Hopkins to beat, and I think Hopkins realizes this. Perhaps this is why he’s been trying to get into Dawson’s head. It’s not worked because Dawson is above psych games and he knows what he sees in the 46-year-old Hopkins. Dawson knows he can beat Hopkins, and he’s known this for the past three years as he tried over and over again to get Hopkins in the ring with him.

Dawson says he’s training to go for a knockout against Hopkins. Dawson doesn’t want to leave it up to the judges in case they decide to award Hopkins a decision despite the fact that he’ll likely get badly outworked in this fight. When you’ve got a fighter as famous as Hopkins, there’s a chance that the judges could score the fight in his favor. Things like this happen in boxing, but hopefully the judges have their heads screwed on straight and don’t give the decision to the wrong man on October 15th out of sentimental value.
