Cotto, 31, is now working with Top Rank on a fight by fight basis and is free to make fights with non-Top Rank fighters such as Mayweather.

This could be off the table if Bob Arum, the promoter for Cotto, selects him as Manny Pacquiao’s next opponent in June or whenever Arum plans on letting Pacquiao fight again. Cotto is in the running for Pacquiao, and that would likely interest him more than a Mayweather bout because he was already badly beaten by Pacquiao two years ago and wants to try and avenge that defeat.

A fight between Cotto and Mayweather would break Cotto’s three-fight streak of taking on older or physically injured fighters. Since Cotto was taken apart by Pacquiao three years ago, Cotto has been matched against Ricardo Mayorga, 38, Yuri Foreman and Antonio Margarito.

Mayweather is also considering fights against Robert Guerrero and Saul Alvarez. Neither of those two fighters would bring in the kind of pay per view numbers as a fight against the much better known Cotto. If Mayweather wants to make the most money possible in his next fight then Cotto is the best choice of the bunch. Cotto wants the fight with Mayweather and this would be a great chance for him to prove himself. However, he’d have to stay off his knees when the going gets tough because this isn’t Margarito with an injured eye or Foreman with a bad leg. Mayweather isn’t physically limited or old as the hills. Cotto could have fight and hope for the best. I can see him taking some knees at some point. I’m hoping Cotto wouldn’t drop to his knees when he stats taking a beating but I think he might look to take the safe way out when the going gets tough.
