By Jason Kim: Last Saturday night’s pay-per-view attraction between WBA junior middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (36-2, 29 KO’s) and 38-year-old former two division world champion Ricardo Mayorga (29-8-1, 23 KO’s) brought in good PPV numbers, says Dan Rafael of ESPN. Rafael is reporting that the Cotto-Mayorga fight brought in between 200-250 thousand buys. These are really good numbers for a match-up between an older fighter like Mayorga and Cotto.

Those numbers aren’t anywhere near the kinds of numbers that Cotto got with his fight against Manny Pacquiao in 2009, but Mayorga isn’t as popular as Pacquiao, so these aren’t bad numbers under the circumstances. Cotto and Mayorga should be very happy with the results. Cotto won the fight by a 12th round TKO after Mayorga injured his left hand during the middle of an exchange.

Cotto fought a different type of fight from the kinds he’s had in the past. Instead of slugging it out with Mayorga, Cotto spent a good portion of the fight boxing Mayorga, hitting him with jabs and moving out of the way of him when he came forward looking to pressure Cotto. This is a style that worked well for Cotto and something he will need in a rematch with Antonio Margarito in July if Cotto is to be successful. He can’t stand in front of Margarito and slug it out with him because the results might be disastrous for Cotto just as they were when the two fought three years ago in 2008. Margarito stopped Cotto in the 11th round in that fight and gave him a bad beating that left Cotto’s face a bloody mess.
