Cotto, Canelo and Quillin have to be put on the spot for not fighting Golovkin

golovkin55555By Dan Ambrose: WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin’s trainer Abel Sanchez thinks that the top “A-lister” middleweights in the division need to be shamed and put on the spot for them not facing Golovkin.

Sanchez is specifically talking about Peter Quillin, Miguel Cotto and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. Sanchez believes that it’s high time that they agree to fight Golovkin, because their excuses for not fighting him don’t fly.

Cotto’s trainer Freddie Roach has said that Golovkin isn’t well-known enough and that he doesn’t bring anything to the table.

Qullin also recently said that Golovkin isn’t a big enough name right now for him to want to face him. Canelo hasn’t said anything about why he’s not fighting Golovkin, but it doesn’t matter. The fact that Canelo isn’t accepting Golovkin’s challenges to fight him suggests that Canelo isn’t eager to take the fight with him.

“I think he’s outshined them (Peter Quillin, Miguel Cotto and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez), Sanchez said to the media on Wednesday. “It’s up to you folks to shame them. Ask them why not. Ask Peter why not. Peter said he’s not known. Read him the numbers. Freddie [Roach] said he’s not seen Gennady. I know Freddie’s seen Golovkin. And Freddie said he’s not known enough. Freddie’s been around too long to say these things. You folks need to make sure that when May comes along and Cotto fights someone and wins, if he wins, you ask why they’re not doing what the WBC ordered. If they choose not to or if they choose to go down to 154, that’s okay with us too. The fact is Gennady wants to be the best at 160 and he wants to have all the belts. If Cotto doesn’t want to fight then that’s okay. We’ll fight somebody else for that belt. The A-listers have to be asked those questions and be put on notice. This kid is here to stay and this kid is the best in the world.”

I don’t know that the media’s shaming of Canelo, Cotto and Quillin will be enough to get them to fight Golovkin. I think they see it as a situation where they have too much to lose for them to want to face Golovkin.

If you think about it, those guys could wind up getting beaten up and knocked out by Golovkin. If that happens you can expect to see their popularity drop off dramatically.
