Chisora vs. Pala tonight in London

chisora500By Scott Gilfoid: EBU heavyweight champion Dereck Chisora’s latest mismatch is tonight when he defends his strap against Ondrej Pala (32-3, 22 KO’s) at the Copper Box Arena in London, UK. I’ve lost track of all the guys that pulled out of this fight. Don’t expect much in terms of a fight.

The heavily tattooed Pala has faced extremely limited opposition during his career. He’s got victories over a 43-year-old Henry Akinwande, Konstantin Airich, Robert Hawkins, Darnell Wilson, Arthur Cook, and Oleksiy Mazikin. Those are the only recognizable wins I can see on his resume, and I’m not impressed with any of them. Pala also has losses to Rene Dettweiler, Denis Boytsov and Airich.

Chisora wants a big fight against Deontay Wilder and Tyson Fury in 2014, but how can he put the pressure on them when he’s fighting guys like this? At 29, it’s time for Chisora to get back in the big leagues. Chisora makes it so easy to ignore him by him fighting guys like Pala and Edmund Gerber. If Chisora wants to fight the Deontay’s of the boxing world, then he needs to forget about the minor titles and look to fight guys like Bryant Jennings, Fres Oquendo, Travis Kaufman, Andy Ruiz Jr, Johnathon Banks, Eric Molina and Lucas “Big Daddy Browne. These are the guys that Chisora needs to beat in order to get to Fury and Deontay, because right now Chisora is kind of scrapping the bottom of the barrel in terms of competition facing fighters like Pala and Gerber. He needs to step it up considerably and soon before he ages out.

When I hear Chisora’s trainer Don Charles talking about him fighting for a world by this time next year, I just want laugh because it’s such a pitiful pipe dream. There’s no way Chisora will be fighting for a world title again by next year, at least not if he’s going to continue dining on the likes of Pala and Gerber. Chisora would have to go straight to the top and grab a couple of quick scalps off the top contenders like Bermane Stiverne and Chris Arreola if he wanted to put himself in the express lane to a world title shot in 2014. Will Chisora do that? I’m not holding my breath waiting for that to happen.

Tonight’s undercard is barren of interesting fights and fighters. I don’t see one interesting fight on the entire card, including the main event between Chisora and Pala. The undercard fights are as follows:

Frank Buglioni vs. Stepan Horvath
Bradley Skeete vs. Colin Lynes
Gary Corcoran vs. Dai Jones
Gary Cornish vs. Ivica Perkovic

As far as the rest of the card, there’s a number of other fights involving guys I’ve never heard of so I didn’t bother listing them.
