Image: Chavez Jr. vs. Martinez II rematch possible for September 14thBy Chris Williams: A rematch between WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez (50-2-2, 28 KO’s) and former WBC 160 lb champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (46-1-1, 32 KO’s) is possible for September 14th at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, according to RingTV. Martinez’s adviser Sampson Lewkowicz says that Martinez and Chavez Jr. will possibly meet on September 14th, provided that both fighters win their next fights.

Martinez is planning on fighting in Argentina in the early part of next year against a top middleweight contender. It’s unclear who, if anyone, that Chavez Jr. will be fighting before then. Chavez Jr. could be facing a lengthy suspension by the Nevada State Athletic Commission for testing positive for marijuana for his loss to Martinez last September.

However, whatever suspension that Chavez Jr. receives, much of it will be eaten up already by the time he eventually receives it by the Commission because he’s already been given a temporary suspension. The suspension they give him will likely have time subtracted from his current suspension. But if the Commission gives Chavez Jr. a long suspension then that will obviously change the plans of a Martinez-Chavez Jr II fight.

Chavez Jr. didn’t look good in getting beaten by Martinez. Chavez Jr. was badly out-boxed for 11 rounds, and while he did drop Martinez in the 12th round with a lucky right hand, it’s hard to imagine Chavez Jr. being able to do the same in a rematch. It’s not really an interesting fight for boxing fans that remember in great detail how clueless Chavez Jr. looked against Martinez, but there are enough fans out there that will look at what Chavez Jr. did to Martinez in the 12th to think that he’s got a chance at beating Martinez in a second fight.

The thing of it is the chances are high that it’ll be another one-sided affair with Martinez dominating the action, and Top Rank promotions, the promoters for Chavez Jr., are going to make this fight another pay per view fight. It’s not really appealing to pay to see a fight a second time when the first fight wasn’t particularly competitive.

It’s doubtful that Top Rank will give boxing fans a discount for a second fight, and you can expect a likely price tag of over $40 to see a second bout between Chavez Jr. and Martinez. Given how bad Chavez Jr. looked last time, I think Bob Arum, his promoter, would be asking a lot if he even put $5 price tag on a Chavez Jr-Martinez rematch.

The only way I see Chavez Jr. beating Martinez is if Chavez Jr. goes into the fight weighing close to 190 lbs or more and just basically squashes the lighter Martinez. The World Boxing Council probably won’t have any rehydration limit for the fight, so we could see a cruiserweight sized Chavez Jr. in there with Martinez for a second fight.
