Chavez Jr and Fonfara(Photo credit: Esther Lin/Showtime) By Dan Ambrose: A slightly emaciated looking #3 WBA, #3 WBC super middleweight contender Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (48-1-1, 32 KOs) made weight on Friday in coming in at 171.5 pounds for his non-title catch-weight fight at 172 pounds on Saturday against 4# WBC light heavyweight contender Andrezj Fonfara (26-3, 15 KOs) on Showtime Championship Boxing from the StubHub Center in Carson, California.

According to Fight News, Chavez Jr. could possibly face WBC light heavyweight champion Adonis Stevenson if he beats Fonfara on Saturday. Whether that fight gets made would be up to Chavez Jr. and his adviser Al Haymon.

Making the Chavez Jr-Stevenson fight would likely be a fairly easy thing if Chavez Jr. wants the fight because Haymon is also the adviser for Stevenson. As emaciated as Chavez Jr. looked at the weigh-in today, I think he would have no problems moving up the additional three pounds to fight at 175 against Adonis.

Chavez Jr. looked like he he’s going to put on at least 10, possibly 15 pounds after he rehydrates for tomorrow night’s fight against Fonfara. Chavez Jr. might walk into the ring against Fonfara weighing between 182-190 pounds.

Chavez Jr. is arguably too big to be fighting at super middleweight, and he’d be better off moving up to the full weight for the light heavyweight division rather than draining down to make 168 and experiencing the same weight issues that he did when he was dehydrating to make 160.

Fonfara weighed 171.5 pounds and looked confident and very strong for the weight. In contrast to Chavez Jr., Fonfara didn’t looked drained at all. Fonfara looked a lot better than Chavez Jr, even though Fonfara fights at 175 and had to drain down weight to make the 172 pound weigh-in. It should have been Chavez Jr. who looked better because he moved up in weight from the middleweight division after his loss to Sergio Martinez in 2012. However, Chavez Jr. failed to make the 168 pound limit in his first fight at super middleweight in 2013 in his fight against Brian Vera.

They moved the weight to 173 pounds for the weigh-in to accommodate Chavez Jr. After he made weight, and looked weight drained at 173, Chavez Jr. reportedly rehydrated to 187 pounds on the night of the fight against Vera in beating him by a highly contested decision. In his last fight, Chavez Jr. finally made the super middleweight limit in defeating Vera by a 12 round unanimous decision in 2014. Chavez Jr. won this fight without too many problems, but he should have looked better considering who he was facing.

Fonfara might pull off the upset on Saturday if he can keep the fight on the outside and prevent Chavez Jr. from working him over with body shots. Chavez Jr. still likes to work in close like his famous father Julio Chavez Sr. used to do. Fonfara can punch really hard, and he could give Chavez Jr. all he can ask for in this fight. Chavez Jr. hasn’t fought a puncher like Fonfara before, and he’s coming off of a 13 month layoff since his last fight.
