Canelo vs. Cotto bout expected to be announced next week

canelo901By Dan Ambrose: A mini-mega fight between Miguel Cotto (38-4, 31 KO’s) and former WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-1-1, 30 KO’s) is expected to be announced this week for March 8th, according to Husleboss. The fight will be on Showtime pay-per-view from the MGM Grand, in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA. This fight pits two former victims of Floyd Mayweather Jr. to face off. The winner could find himself back in with Mayweather, as it would be the most appealing option for them.

Golden Boy Promotions recently offered Cotto $10 million+ to take the fight with Canelo, and it seemed pretty obvious that was going to take it. He said he wanted to think it over, because he was also considering a fight against WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez for his 160 lb. belt. But it looks like the money for the Canelo fight was just too big for Cotto to ignore. It would have been an insane move for Cotto to turn all that money down and then face Sergio and probably lose to him.

This is a real toss-up fight. Canelo has the boxing skills to win, but he looked so bad in getting beaten by Mayweather that you kind of have to favor Cotto. He did a much better job in his fight with Mayweather in May of last year. But Canelo did a better job against Austin Trout than Cotto did. But that before Cotto was trained by Freddie Roach. I think this version of Cotto would knock Trout out or at least beat him bad enough to win a decision. The red-haired Canelo won a disputed 12 round decision over Trout in a fight with open scoring in San Antonio, Texas last April. I had Trout winning that fight by a four rounds because Canelo got tired and spent too many rounds resting against the ropes rather than fighting.

The announcement for the Canelo-Cotto bout should be taking place this week, and it’ll be good to have this fight a done deal.

Hopefully for Cotto’s sake he has some wording in the contract about a rehydration clause to keep Canelo from ballooning up over 170+ by fight time, because Cotto doesn’t need to be fighting a light heavyweight on March 8th. Cotto is only 5’7″, and he has to step in the ring with someone that is weighing in as a light heavyweight, it could be too much for him.
