Campbell vs. Garcia a possibility for Maidana-Morales undercard on 4/9

By Jason Kim: There’s talk of former lightweight champion Nate Campbell (33-7-1, 25 KO’s) facing unbeaten light welterweight contender Danny Garcia (20-0, 14 KO’s) on the undercard of the Marcos Maidana vs. Erik Morales fight on April 9th at the MGM Grand, in Las Vegas, Nevada. Adding Campbell and Garcia to the card will make this an even bigger card than it already is, even though Campbell-Garcia is pretty much a mismatch because of Campbell’s advanced age.

Campbell is now 39, and has lost his last two fights to Victor Ortiz and Walter Estrada. Garcia is an excellent fighter, so unless Campbell suddenly can turn back time three or four years, he’s going to have problems in this fight. Campbell doesn’t seem like he belongs at light welterweight and would be much better off moving back down to lightweight if he’s committed to continuing his sinking career.

Unfortunately, Campbell can’t seem to make lightweight anymore and is kind of resigned to fighting as a light welterweight. If he takes on a tough fighter like Garcia, you got to give Campbell credit for not taking an easy opponent. However, he’s going to have problems in this fight and I can’t see him winning or doing well at all. Campbell was one of the best fighters in the lightweight division from 2007 to 2009, beating the likes of Juan Diaz, Ali Funeka, Wilson Alcorro, Matt Zegan and Ricky Quiles. However, Campbell grew out of the division and hasn’t had the same kind of success he once had in the lightweight division now that he’s moved up to light welterweight.

The other fights on the card are as follows:

Marcos Maidana vs. Erik Morales
Robert Guerrero vs. Michael Katsidis
Miguel Jose Cotto vs. Paulie Malignaggi
James Kirkland vs. TBA
