Image: Broner stops Theophane - results(Photo credit: Nabeel Ahmad/Premier Boxing Champions) By Jim Dower: It wasn’t easy but Adrien “The Problem” Broner (32-2, 24 KOs) was able to stop #9 WBA Ashley “Treasure” Theophane (39-7-1, 11 KOs) in the 9th round in a highly competitive fight on Friday night at the D.C Armory in Washington, DC. Broner was outworked by the busier Theophane in many of the rounds, and it appeared that the the British fighter was starting to take over the fight after the 6th. However, Broner caught Theophane with a scorching right uppercut in the 9th.

Broner then moved in and landed a low blow that further hurt Theophane. At that point, the referee Luis Pabon stopped the fight after thinking that Theophane was signaling that he wanted the fight stopped. Theophane was letting the referee know that he’d been hit low. It’s unknown how the referee missed the low blow because it was visible to all. The fight was stopped at 1:10 of the 9th.

Theophane was able to put a lot of pressure on Broner throughout the fight. He was landing body shots and a lot of head shots as well. However, Theophane’s lack of punching power enabled Broner to stick around long enough to land a big shot to get a stoppage.

“I don’t play kid games with Adrien Broner,” Floyd Mayweather Jr. said about Broner after the fight upon hearing him saying he wants to fight.

Broner sounded eager to get the fight against Mayweather after the fight. However, it’s highly unlikely that Mayweather will give the 26-year-old Broner a fight. Mayweather has already said that if he does come back, he’d only do it for a fight against unbeaten WBC welterweight champion Danny Garcia. He has an unbeaten record and the WBC 147lb title that Mayweather previously held. However, if there’s interest in a fight between them, then it’s possible. Mayweather doesn’t really need the money. The only reason he would want to come back is to shut Broner up and put him in his place.

Undefeated lightweight knockout artist Robert Easter Jr. (17-0, 14 KOs) stayed undefeated with a 5th round knockout over Algenis Mendez (23-4, 12 KOs) on Friday night on the undercard of the Adrien Broner vs. Ashley Theophane card on Premier Boxing Champions on Spike TV from the DC Armory in Washington, DC. Easter sent a crashing right hand to the head of Mendez in the 5th round to get a Thomas Hearns type of knockout. The fight was halted at 2:43 of the round.

Undefeated lightweight prospect Gervonta “The One” Davis (15-0, 14 KOs) totally dominated an over-matched Guillermo Avila (16-6, 13 KOs) in defeated him by a sixth round knockout. The hard hitting Davis put Avila down in the 5th, and then finished him off in the 6th. The fight was officially halted at :29 of the 6th. Davis looked really good in the fight. It’s time for him to be stepped up against better competition because his fights are too one-sided.

Lightweight Anthony Peterson (37-1, 24 KOs) defeated Samuel “Untouchable” Neequaye (22-2, 15 KOs) by a 10 round unanimous decision on Friday night at the DC Armory in Washington, DC. The final judges’ scores were 100-90, 97-93 and 96-94.

Peterson, the brother for former IBF light welterweight champion Lamont Peterson, put a lot of pressure on Neequaye all night long to outwork him to get the decision.

The 31-year-old Anthony Peterson is a good fighter, but he just hasn’t stepped it up ever since he was beaten by Brandon Rios by a 7th round disqualification defeat six years ago in 2010. Since that loss, Peterson has been facing the same poor opposition each time he fights.

It was understand for Peterson to take a couple of confidence booster opponents following his loss to Rios, but is now on his sixth straight year of showcase fights, and he’s about to turn 32 in May. He’s wasted a lot of time in his career, and he needs to step it already with the little time he has left in his career. If he can’t cut it against the best, then he needs to find out rather than wasting his career fighting weaker opposition over and over again.
