Broner: Porter can’t beat me, it’s not going to happen

_DSC8672(Photo credit: Idris Erba/Mayweather Promotions) By Dan Ambrose: Adrien Broner (30-1, 22 KOs) doesn’t think he has any chance of losing this Saturday night in his 144lb catch-weight fight against Shawn Porter (25-1-1, 16 KOs) at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. Broner doesn’t see himself as the next Floyd Mayweather Jr, but rather the first Adrien Broner.

It’s unclear where Broner is going with that. It’s definitely true that Broner isn’t going to be the next Mayweather, but he try his best to be the best possible fighter that he can be. We’ve got a glimpse of Broner’s limits as a fighter two years ago when he was beaten by Marcos Maidana by a 12 round decision.

Now we’re going to see whether Broner has improved since then when he gets inside the ring with a Maidana clone in Shawn Porter. But with the rehydration limit of 154 pounds, it’s going to be difficult for Porter to do the same things that Maidana did when he fought Broner at 165 pounds. Maidana had a big weight advantage against Broner, and this led to him bullying him with his size. Porter will have to use his strength, work rate and endurance if he wants to get a win over Broner.

“Porter can’t beat me, it’s not going to happen,” Broner said. “I will not be the next Floyd Mayweather. I will be the first and only Adrien Broner. “I don’t know why I would be terrified of Porter. I’m not terrified of anything. He can talk, it’s all okay.”

With Mayweather likely to be at ringside on Saturday night, it’s putting a lot of pressure on Broner to show that he can be the guy that can carry on for Mayweather after he leaves the sport in 2016.

“He’s [Broner] one of the main guys that can carry the torch after Floyd Mayweather,” Mayweather said. “Shawn Porter is not an easy task. He’s a tough competitor.”

This is a definite step up for Broner from the last three fights he’s had against Carlos Molina, John Molina Jr. and Emmanuel Taylor. Even if Porter winds up weight drained on Saturday due to the combination of the catch-weight and the 154lb rehydration limit, it’s still going to be a considerable step up for Broner to try and deal with Porter.

Unless Broner is more active and better defensively than what we’ve been seeing from him lately, he could have a really tough time against Porter. But the weight requirements could be Broner’s ace in the hole for him in this fight.
