stevenson55By Jim Dower: WBC light heavyweight champion Adonis Stevenson (23-1, 20 KO’s) stopped challenger Tony Bellew (20-2-1, 12 KO’s) in the 6th round on Saturday night at the Colisee de Quebec, Quebec City, Quebec, Canada.

Stevenson knocked Bellew down with a left hand to the head in the 6th round. After a badly hurt Bellew got back to his feet, Stevenson tagged Bellew with a solid left hand to the head that had Bellew do a chicken dance with his legs. Stevenson then tagged Bellew one more time with a big left than snapped his head back violently. The referee then waived off the fight.

In the 4th round, Bellew was able to land some solid shots when he flurries on Stevenson during an exchange. That was how Bellew should have fought the entire fight because he landed well during that round. But Bellew’s problem was he kept trying to land one solid shot at a time, and that approach favored the quicker Stevenson.

Stevenson said he wants to fight Carl Froch or Bernard Hopkins next, when asked by Max Kellerman of HBO who he wants to fight next. Stevenson will fight Sergey Kovalev next if HBO puts up the money to make it worthwhile.

WBO light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev (23-0-1, 21 KO’s) remained unbeaten with an impressive 2nd round knockout win over fringe contender Ismayl Sillakh (21-2, 17 KO’s).

Kovalev dropped Sillakh down twice with right-left combinations. Sillakh was too hurt to get up after the 2nd knockdown and the fight was halted by referee Marlon Wright at 0:50 of the 2nd round.

Sillakh did a good job of moving in the 1st round and keeping Kovalev from landing his hard power shots. Sillakh nailed Kovalev with some good left hooks as he was coming forward a number of times in the round.

At the start of the 2nd, Kovalev looked like he meant business when he came out and he quickly connected with a right hand followed by a left to the head that put Sillakh down. He was able to stagger to his feet and follow the referee’s instructions to walk towards him. However, Sillakh was badly hurt and he wasn’t going to survive the round. Kovalev then quickly came up and nailed him with a combination and put him on the canvas for the 2nd and final knockdown of the fight. The referee Marlon Wright then stepped in and halted the bout.

After the fight Kovalev told Max Kellerman of HBO that he wants to fight “Adonis” next if possible.
