Angulo vs. Rosado 2 possible for Mayweather-Guerrero undercard on May 4th

kirkland343By Dan Ambrose: Junior middleweight contenders Alfredo Angulo (22-2, 18 KO’s) and Gabriel Rosado (21-6, 13 KO’s) could be end up on the undercard of the Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Robert Guerrero pay-per-view card on May 4th on Showtime/CBS, according to fighthype.com.

The Angulo-Rosado fight, which would be a rematch of their 2009 fight that saw Angulo easily stop Rosado in the 2nd round, would be make it on the televised portion of the card. The card already has WBC featherweight champion Daniel Ponce De Leon vs. Abner Mare penciled in as the co-main event.

Former IBF bantamweight champion Leo Santa Cruz could also end up on the card. Golden Boy wants to stack the card in order to maximize PPV sales, and it looks like they want to add as many Mexican fighters as possibly in order to take advantage of the Mexican Cinco de Mayo holiday that takes place during the weekend of the May 4th fight.

They’re hoping that a lot of Mexican boxing fans will be at home that night and will be eager to purchase the fight card if they load it with Mexican fighters. Golden Boy Promotions took a big hit this past week when the highly popular Mexican fighter WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez pulled out of the May 4th fight card after failing to get an agreement from Mayweather for a fight between them in September.

Canelo pulling out of the card could wind up costing the May 4th card as many as 200,000 PPV sales, according to Dan Rafael. The card will still likely bring in over 1 million PPV buys, but with Canelo it would have been that much bigger.

Angulo, #9 WBC, knocked Rosado down twice in stopping him in the 2nd round in August 2009. This would be a good match-up for Angulo, and not such a good match-up for Rosado. Golden Boy wants to somehow bring Angulo back after he was stopped in the 6th round by James Kirkland in November 2011. Angulo has fought twice since that defeat, but he didn’t look at all good in his last fight against Jorge Silva last December.

Angulo may beat someone like Rosado, but he doesn’t match up with guys like Canelo and Austin Trout. Golden Boy needs to steer Angulo towards the 154 pound champions Ishe Smith and Zaurbek Baysangurov instead because he’ll never be able to beat Canelo or Trout.

Rosado, #8 WBO, was stopped in the 7th round last January by WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin in an ill-advised move up in weight to 160 lbs. for that fight. Rosado ran the entire fight, and still ended up taking a beating and getting stopped.
