Angulo vs. Gomez tonight

By Eric Thomas: Number #2 ranked WBC junior middleweight contender Alfredo Angulo (19-1, 16 KO’s) sees action tonight against Joseph Gomez (17-4-1, 8 KO’s) in a scheduled 12 round bout for the vacant World Boxing Council Continental Americas light middleweight title at the Nido Sport Center, Mexicali, Baja California, Mexico. Angulo, 29, is fighting for the first time since July 2010. He lost a year of his career due to immigration problems.

Angulo should have no problems beating the 26-year-old Gomez tonight. Gomez has lost three of his last four fights and been stopped in two of them by Elco Garcia and Patrick Majewski. The only thing that Angulo can try to do is look better than those guys did in taking Gomez out. Majewski is a notable prospect known for a huge workrate. Angulo needs to jump on Gomez and blast him out, although he does need rounds in a bad way.

It’s too bad that Angulo didn’t opt to stay busy fighting in Mexico because he’s now 29, and has nothing to show for the last year. Although he’s still ranked high and within sight of title shot, it’s not good that Angulo hasn’t fought for so long. By now, he’d likely have already captured a title if he had continued to fight. As it is, it’s unclear whether he’s good enough to beat the current WBC junior middleweight champion Saul Alvarez. I don’t think he is. Alvarez punches as hard as Angulo but with arguably much better boxing skills.

Angulo needs to start fighting more often after this fight. If he has to fight in Mexico to make that happen then so be it. He can’t sit idle for another year.
