Alvarez vs. Mosley: Saul looking to get his first big scalp

By Eric Thomas: WBC junior middleweight champion Saul Alvarez (39-0-1, 29 KO’s) gets the biggest name of his career in a fight against 40-year-old Shane Mosley (46-7-1, 39 KO’s) on May 5th on HBO pay-per-view. The fight may seem like a hopeless mismatch to boxing fans, but it’s needed for the 21-year-old Alvarez to continue to build his fan base.

Saul has to be seen knocking off an old lion with a name. It doesn’t matter that Mosley is probably completely shot to pieces. What’s important is that he gets a big name and the casual boxing fans, who likely still think Mosley is in his prime, will be impressed with seeing Alvarez take him apart with no problem on May 5th at the MGM Grand, in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Mosley has but a small chance and that’s if he goes after Alvarez with everything he’s got in the first few rounds and tries to blast him out with something big. Mosley literally has to open up all the way and put his foot completely down on the throttle if he wants to try and pull an upset. It’s a risky thing to do because if Mosley fails, he’ll gas out and stay gassed out for the remainder of the fight, such as it is.

If he gasses out against Alvarez, Mosley will get knocked out. But the alternative to that will be far worse because Mosley will take punishment for 12 long rounds and get pounded around in losing by a 12 round decision. Mosley is better off going all out and getting it over with. If he can fight really hard for three rounds, he might win. I doubt it because I think Mosley can’t fight hard for more than a round without getting exhausted and being useless like he was in the Floyd Mayweather Jr. fight after gassing out in the 2nd round while tying to get a stoppage. Mosley has to let it all go. Alvarez is too good to try and out-box, and he hits too hard to stay in there with for 12 rounds.
