Alvarez vs. Gomez: Alfonso should make it interesting for a few rounds

By Eric Thomas: A sacrificial lamb has been found in the form of Alfonso Gomez (23-4-2, 12 KO’s) to face WBC junior middleweight champion Saul Alvarez (37-0-1, 27 KO’s) on September 17th at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California. The World Boxing Council has even given Gomez a number #6 ranking for this fight, making it appear that he’s actually got a chance against the bigger, stronger, younger and much more skilled Alvarez.

Gomez doesn’t stand a chance, not even a punchers’ chance in this fight. Gomez is hunting for bear with nothing more than a sling shot and an attitude. That’s not going to get the job done against Canelo I’m afraid. However, Gomez will serve the purpose of making Alvarez look exceptional for as long as the fight lasts, because Gomez will be standing right in front of Alvarez trying to punch.

Gomez will try to take the fight to Alvarez and won’t back off even when he starts getting his head caved in. Alvarez’s recent opponent Matthew Hatton realized that he had to back off from the power shots Alvarez was hitting him. Alvarez’s last opponent realized that as well, and seemed to quit trying to win after only three or four rounds. Gomez won’t quit trying, which is why he’s probably going to get knocked out really fast in this fight. He’s going to go right into the teeth of Alvarez’s offense and end up getting mowed down much in the same way he did against Miguel Cotto.

Without huge power or a great chin, Gomez doesn’t have a prayer in this fight. He’s got to see this as a 3 round fight where he goes all out during that span of time and hopes he can score a knockout. If Alvarez is still standing at the end of the 3rd, which I’m sure he will, Gomez will be ready to collapse if he lasts that long.
