Schaefer: I have no interest in dealing with Bob Arum

schaefer2By Chris Williams: Earlier this week Golden Boy Promotions president and chief shareholder Oscar De La Hoya said that he has no problems working with Bob Arum of Top Rank, and that he’s interested in putting a fight together between Golden Boy promoted fighter Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Arum’s top fighter Manny Pacquiao.

Well, it looks like that’s not going to happen unless De La Hoya makes a move to convince Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer because he still has no interest in working with Arum. Schaefer is saying he runs Golden Boy unless Oscar wants to fire him.

Pacquiao likely to re-sign with Top Rank

pac7893487By Chris Williams: Top Rank promoter Bob Arum dropped a bomb shell in an interview on Sunday in which he revealed that Manny Pacquiao may re-sign with him when his contract expires at the end of this year. This means that we probably will not get a chance to see Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. fight.

Mayweather gave Pacquiao the path to get a fight with him when he said that he would never fight Pacquiao while he’s still with Arum. But if Pacquiao is going to re-sign with Arum, does this mean that Pacquiao doesn’t want to fight Mayweather? Is this Pacquiao’s way out of fighting him by signing for another 1-2 years when his current contract expires?

“I just had a good meeting with Michael [Koncz] yesterday, and I’ll leave it at that,” said Arum to RingTV. “I have a contract with Manny, and he’s saying that we may very well renew the contract past 2015.”

Essential Reasons Why Pacquiao Should Switch To Golden Boy or TMT

pac454By Miguel Alejandro Lopez: Manny Pacquiao (55-5-1), arguably the best pound for pound boxing superstar prior to two recent heartbreaking defeats, has enough reasons to call it quits with his current promotional stable – Top Rank Promotions.

The first plausible reason for leaving Top Rank is lack of new competition. Bob Arum, the head honcho of Top Rank, is known for keeping his fighters in-house. This means that for many years, fans will see the same guys fighting each other. And with the lack of viable opponents, reruns of each fight will be inevitable. Right now, Pacquiao is only being presented with the options of facing Marquez or Bradley again in 2014, and either Rios or Alvarado in 2013.

Why should fighters sign with Golden Boy or Top Rank?

With the recent Abner Mares-Nonito Donaire fiasco now behind us, all that’s been proven is that Top Rank and Golden Boy still cannot work together. This begs the question, why should fighters still sign for them when they know there is a chance that the biggest fights, and biggest paydays, may not be available to them because of the cold war between the two promotional firms.

The Top Rank and Golden Boy feud is ruining boxing

By John Kelvin: A lot of people like to claim that boxing is dying and that casual fans are no longer interested in the sport. The huge pay-per-view numbers generated by Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather contradict these claims. However, the sport would be a lot healthier and popular if the current conflict between the top two promotional companies, Top Rank and Golden Boy was brought to an end. This conflict has and will continue to have a significant impact on the sport as the top champions will be unable to face each other to decide who is the very best in the division.

Rigondeaux extends contract with Top Rank

Image: Rigondeaux extends contract with Top RankBy Dan Ambrose: WBA World super bantamweight champion Guillermo Rigondeaux (11-0, 8 KO’s) has reportedly extended his contract with Top Rank, which had previously run out recently. According to RingTV, the 32-year-old Rigondeaux has signed a multi-fight deal with Top Rank. It’s unclear how long the contract is or if it’s just for three fights.

Golden Boy Promotions supposedly offered a bigger deal with for Rigondeaux in terms of money, but for some reason Rigondeaux opted to stay with Top Rank. It’s likely that he resigned because of the potential to get a big money fight against IBF/WBO super bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire, who is easily the biggest money maker in the super bantamweight division.

Top Rank puts in official request to NSAC for Pacquiao vs. TBA on December 8th

Image: Top Rank puts in official request to NSAC for Pacquiao vs. TBA on December 8thBy Chris Williams: Well, it looks like former WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao will be fighting on December 8th against somebody, as his promoters at Top Rank officially put in a request to the Nevada State Athletic Commission to do a fight between Pacquiao vs. an opponent still to be determined.

Now that the obvious is out of the way, Top Rank can continue working on putting together a fourth fight between Pacquiao and now 39-year-old Juan Manuel Marquez for the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada on December 8th. It’s pretty much academic at this point that Marquez will be the guy that’s facing Pacquiao yet again in another expensive pay per view bout with a likely price tag of something in the neighborhood of $49.99.
